Glenfinnan is famous for a number of reasons, both historical and contemporary. It was here that Bonnie Prince Charlie raised the standard in 1745 at the start of the doomed Jacobite uprising, and not far from here is the point where he left mainland Scotland forever after the final battle at Culloden. In more recent times the scenery in and around Glenfinnan has been widely used in films and television.

Most recently, the Harry Potter films have frequently featured Glenfinnan viaduct whilst Loch Sheil and its mountains are the backdrop for much of "The Goblet of Fire." The oldest part of the hotel dates, we believe, to the late 17th century. At that time it would have been a very basic place, for rest and to change horses. The old name for the hotel was The Stage House, and inns such as this were located about every 10 miles along the road. The hotel has been extended and upgraded over the years and now offers bedrooms all with coombed ceilings in the traditional style.

Downstairs the public rooms are spacious, the Stage House lounge bar is light and airy and has a vaulted pine clad ceiling. An excellent choice of single malt whiskies and bottled Scottish ales is on offer alongside a range of draught beers, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks. The bar is well known locally for the quality of the food served here. The emphasis is on fresh fish, meat, poultry, game and vegetables, simply cooked to preserve the natural flavours.
