 Newmills Cottage is situated in south Edinburgh in a peaceful and green area called Balerno. There is an excellent bus service to the city centre and many of our guests prefer to leave the car in our grounds and have a relaxing day sightseeing. The cottage is also a perfect base for touring the central area of Scotland. The Borders, Perthshire, St Andrews, Stirling, and the Trossachs are all easily reached for day visits and we would be delighted to help any guests with arrangements regarding routes. |

Coming by Plane
Take the Airlink bus up to Haymarket (opposite the railway station). At Haymarket there are four roads, make your way to Dalry Road and find the 44 bus stop - near the junctions and on the opposite side of the road to the station - i.e going up the hill. The number 44 bus (there are 2 different companies-Lothian and First Bus that run this route and either will do) will say "Balerno" on the front. Get off at Lanark Road West (ask the driver to advise you), walk for few metres and you will find Newmills Cottage on the right hand-side of the street at number 472.
Coming by Plane+Car
From the airport: take A8 signposted Edinburgh. At Gogar Roundabout keep in left hand lanes for A720 City Bypass. You will only be on A720 for a very short time and are taking the first exit (signposted A71, M8 Glasgow, Edinburgh City Centre, A71 Kilmarnock). Take next exit up to Calder Roundabout. At roundabout turn right on to A71 and take left turn signposted Currie, Balerno, & Heriot Watt University. Go through first and second roundabouts up to T junction. Turn right on to Lanark Road West (A70). In approximately one mile, number 472 Newmills Cottage is on the right hand side, through stone pillared entrance next to field.
From North, South, East, and West: follow signs to bring you to A71 Calder Junction just off City Bypass A720. At Calder Junction Roundabout on A71, travel west following signs for Heriot Watt University. Take first left at traffic lights. Go through two roundabouts up to A70. Turn right on to Lanark Road West. After Balerno sign, go past Newmills Road and prepare to turn right. The cottage is reached through stone pillared entrance and set back from the road with a paddock in front.
Coming by Train
The nearest railway station is "Haymarket". From there take a taxi or bus number 44 or 44A from Dalry Road (at the exit of the railway station turn right, walk for few metres and you will find the street on the right hand-side.
If you arrive at Waverley Station you can take a taxi or bus number 44 (or 44A) on Princes Street which is going to "Balerno". (Please note that you require the exact change!). To get to Princes Street walk out of Waverley station- up the ramp to the street called Waverley Bridge. Turn right and walk up to Princes Street. Turn left along Princes Street to the 44 bus stop (make sure you catch the bus on the Princes Street Gardens and Castle side (not the side the shops are on) and ask the driver to let you know when you reach Lanark Road West. Once at the bus stop walk for few metres and you will find Newmills Cottage on the right hand-side of the street at number 472. |
