Whisky

Scottish Whisky

Think of Scotland and you will probably think of whisky too. Whisky has been distilled in Scotland for hundreds of years, and different theories exist on how it first came to be made. Some suggest it was the Irish missionaries that brought whisky to Scotland. Others say the knights returning from Crusades brought the recipe back from the Middle East. However it arrived it has certainly become a firm part of Scotland's heritage and now it is the Scottish bringing quality whiskies to the rest of the world.

The process of making whisky is an art form and many working distilleries have opened their doors to the public to share the knowledge. Speyside, (around 50 kms from Inverness) has the largest concentration of whisky distilleries in Scotland. The Distilleries lie along the Valley of the Spey river, which is the second longest in the country. It rises in the Monadhliath Mountains and collects a peat flavour as it makes its way to the sea - a key element of the distinctive flavour of the whisky.

Single malt whisky is made from only three ingredients; barley, yeast and pure Highland water. The process starts with the production of high quality barley for malting.
